Boars were a species of omnivorous mammals. They were the ancestors of domesticated pigs. The word 'boar' usually, but not invariably, referred to the male of the species.

Boars had become extinct in England, but were later reintroduced in 1987. This occurred during a massive storm in Kent, when a farm that raised boars was damaged and the boars were allowed to escape. Some of these boars came to the Doctor's house. They evolved into the intelligent Boar race. (PROSE: Mad Dogs and Englishmen)

Boars were often caught for food on Earth. Indeed, when she first met the Fifth Doctor and Peri Brown in Egypt in 1400 BC, Erimem invited them to sample some freshly-caught roast boar. (AUDIO: The Eye of the Scorpion)
