William Hartnell played the First Doctor.
History
Verity Lambert got the idea to cast Hartnell as the Doctor after seeing him in the kitchen-sink drama This Sporting Life. (NOTVALID: Doctor Whoah! 407) He auditioned for the role in 1963 and later got the part. At his audition, he ordered his companions Susan, Ian and Barbara to clean the TARDIS control room. This forced a member of the crew to politely remind him he was no longer in The Army Game. In 1966, he was suceeded in the role by Patrick Troughton. (NOTVALID: Ever Wondered What Happened At.. The Auditions For The Seven Doctors?)
Legacy
While spending Christmas Day aboard the Valiant, the aged Tenth Doctor wore a wig bearing a tag that read "Hartnell, keep". (NOTVALID: Doctor Whoah! 390)
