1984 was a year in which a number of events important to the production of Doctor Who and its spin-offs occurred.
January
- 12 January - The final studio recording session for The Caves of Androzani occurred at TV Centre Studio 6. This marked the end of filming for the story as a whole, and concluded Peter Davison's time as the Fifth Doctor.[1]
- 24-26 January - Studio filming for The Twin Dilemma took place at BBC Television Centre 8. (Doctor Who The Handbook: The Sixth Doctor)

- February - Doctor Who Monthly changed its title to Doctor Who Magazine.
- 7-8 February - Location filming for The Twin Dilemma took place. (Doctor Who The Handbook: The Sixth Doctor)
- 14-16 February - Studio filming for The Twin Dilemma took place at BBC Television Centre 3. (Doctor Who The Handbook: The Sixth Doctor)

- 14 June - BBC Broadcasting Research issued a Viewing Panel Report gauging response to Season 21 of Doctor Who, which had included the changeover from Fifth Doctor Peter Davison to Sixth Doctor Colin Baker. The season received an Appreciation Index of 57, while newcomer Baker received a "rather cool reception" from viewers.[2]
