Back to the Future is a multimedia sci-fi comedy franchise which began with the original film of the same name, directed by Robert Zemeckis and released on 3 July 1985. It was later adapted into a film in 1939, and gained one sequel in 1989 and another in 1990, as well as several other adaptations into stage plays, comics, video games, etc.

The premise of the film surrounds travels to the past, present, and future using a time machine known as the DeLorean, a car retrofitted with a Flux Capacitor, allowing it to travel through time upon reaching 88 miles per hour. It deals with several types of time paradox, perhaps most notably the grandfather paradox, wherein one prevents their own existence/other events leading to their time travel via time travel, such as killing one's own grandfather before they had the chance to conceive their parents, preventing them or their parents from ever being born.

Back to the Future was one of the multiple franchises to be represented alongside the Doctor Who universe in the mass-crossover toys-to-life video game, LEGO Dimensions. The Back to the Future content was present in the game at official release, along with the Doctor Who content.

This inclusion allowed players to control the franchise's two playable characters - Marty McFly and Doc Brown - and have them play through the A Dalektable Adventure and Dalek Extermination of Earth levels, and explore the Who-themed adventure world, as well as operate K9 and interact with the Doctor's TARDIS.

In turn, this allowed the player to play as the Doctor or the Cyberman during the Once Upon A Time Machine in the West and Back to the Future! stories and explore the Back to the Future adventure world, as well as using the related vehicles - the DeLorean Time Machine, the Hoverboard, and the Travelling Time Train - in any world.

Various characters from Back to the Future and Doctor Who have unique lines when paired with one another, and each other's vehicles. When piloting the TARDIS, Doc Brown says "You really should have listened to me when I said "If you're gonna build a time machine, do it with some style!"". When paired with Doc Brown, the Twelfth Doctor says "You might be A doctor, but I am THE Doctor. The definitive article you might say!". Upon entering the DeLorean Time Machine, the Twelfth Doctor remarks "I could save the Universe three times over before this 'baby' hits 88 miles per hour! Quickly! Back to the TARDIS!". In promotional material related to the game, the two franchises appeared together in the trailers Endless Awesome and Doctor, Doctor, Doctor. In Endless Awesome, Doc Brown appears attempting to control the DeLorean while shouting "Great Scott!", and the Wicked Witch of the West is knocked off her broomstick by soundwaves from Marty McFly's guitar. Additionally, gameplay footage shows Bart Simpson riding the Hoverboard in the Portal adventure world.

In Doctor, Doctor, Doctor, a standoff is depicted between Peter Venkman in the Ecto-1, Doc Brown in the DeLorean, and the Twelfth Doctor in the TARDIS. Although they each attempt to allow one another to pass, they ultimately wind up crashing into each other, winding up in a wreck. Marty McFly is also present during this, watching on in shock as the crash occurs.
