Future

The future was the set of all events that occurred after a given point in time, following one's present, which was itself preceded by the past. In regards to time travellers, the concept of past, present and future was relative. Henry Gordon Jago noted that the Doctor made "gutsily gallant peregrinations" into the "freakish fascinations of the future" as well as the "prepossessing provocations of the past". During the 2150s Dalek invasion of Earth, the First Doctor speculated to Ian Chesterton that their first encounter with the Daleks was a million years in the future after the 22nd century. (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth)

Having been brought by the Time Lords to assist the Third Doctor in the First Omega Crisis, the Second Doctor observed that he had been lifted out of his "bit" of their time stream and "pop[ped]" into his own future, "so to speak". (TV: The Three Doctors)

Following the Last Great Time War, the millions of surviving Daleks within the Genesis Ark represented the future to Dalek Sec of the Cult of Skaro. (TV: Doomsday)

Captain Jack Harkness told Gwen Cooper that the Torchwood Institute scavenged alien technology to arm the human race for the future, claiming that the 21st century was "when everything changes". (TV: Everything Changes)

Jack confided to the temporally displaced John Ellis that he was born in the future and that he had lived in the past relative to John, observing that his time was gone too. (TV: Out of Time)

Despite initially accepting that he would take Martha Jones on "just one trip" in the TARDIS, the Tenth Doctor "stretch[ed] the definition" to allow for a trip to her relative past as well as a trip to her relative future. (TV: Gridlock)

As a result of Jack Harkness jumping on to it as it departed Cardiff in 2008, the TARDIS accelerated into the future, through 1,000,000,000, 5,000,000,000, 5,000,000,000,000 50,000,000,000,000 before finally landing on Malcassairo in the year 100,000,000,000,000, the end of the universe. When Toshiko Sato asked how Torchwood could use the Cash Cow to arm themselves against the future, Owen Harper quipped that they could hide behind it. (TV: Meat)

The survivors of the New Dalek Empire regarded the progenitor, a long lost piece of technology which contained the DNA needed to create the New Dalek Paradigm, as both their past and their future, which the Eleventh Doctor remarked was "deep for a Dalek".

The first Daleks of the New Dalek Paradigm, who were created in 1941, were intended to return to their "own time", which the Doctor knew to be in "the future", where they were to "begin again". Ultimately, he failed to prevent the Daleks from escaping via a time corridor. (TV: Victory of the Daleks) The Daleks set their sights on Skaro, their home planet which had been left abandoned and in ruins following the Last Great Time War. Though an initial attempt at recovering the planet was averted by the Doctor, (GAME: City of the Daleks, TV: Asylum of the Daleks) the Daleks eventually succeeded in rebuilding and repopulating Skaro. During Miracle Day in 2011, Jack told Esther Drummond and Rex Matheson that he had seen the future, that he had walked on the future Earth. He warned that the null field generator could render this timeline as "terminal". (TV: End of the Road)

At the end of Miracle Day, Jack revealed to Oswald Danes that he was from the future. From this, Oswald reasoned that Jack knew if they were to "make it through this day" only to be told by Jack that "the future can change", that it was "being written right now". Oswald later referred to Jack as "the future man". (TV: The Blood Line)

In River Song's World, Charles Dickens promoted his "new Christmas special" on television as involving ghosts and the past, the present and future, all at the same time. (TV: The Wedding of River Song)

In the 2010s, the Eleventh Doctor offered Clara Oswald a trip to "future Mars". The Tenth Doctor's Machine That Goes "Ding" could download comics from the future. (TV: The Day of the Doctor)

While attempting to flee from the sentient oil with Nardole and Bill Potts, the Twelfth Doctor took the TARDIS 23 million years into the future from the perspective of Bill, a native of the year 2017. (TV: The Pilot) For her first trip in the TARDIS following this ordeal, Bill asked to go to the future when given the option. When asked why, Bill explained that she wanted to see if the future was happy. (TV: Smile)

Temporally displaced from London in 1834 to Paris in 1943, Ada Lovelace observed the future to be a "world on fire" before travelling to 2020 with the Thirteenth Doctor and Noor Inayat Khan. Returning both to their own time, the Doctor erased their memory of this experience. (TV: Spyfall)

As discovered by the Doctor and Team TARDIS, Orphan 55 was a future version of Earth. However, the Doctor insisted that it was but a "possible future" which was not fixed. (TV: Orphan 55)

The Fugitive Doctor determined that the Thirteenth Doctor was in her future. (TV: Fugitive of the Judoon)

Behind the scenes

• In The Trip of a Lifetime, the Ninth Doctor tells the audience that they will see "aliens from the future".
• Though not stated in the episode, writer Neil Gaiman revealed that he set Nightmare in Silver as taking place "a quarter of a million years into the future."
