Ron was in a relationship with Patricia McBride, whom he worked with at Sheffield Hallam University, for five years. Their marriage ended in divorce, (AUDIO: The Mindless Ones) which the Sixth Doctor believed might have been because he was on some level aware of her prejudices. (AUDIO: Girl in a Bubble) He went on to marry Elise Kaplan.
After receiving a number of complaints from undergraduate students about Patricia, Ron offered to exempt her from teaching them so long as she took a retraining course at the Mindless Facility. He and Mr Betterment intended to have the Home Secretary be subjected to the Betterment Machine, but he came to have second thoughts and the machine was destroyed thanks to the Doctor and Patricia. Ron helped organise an exhibition at the Botanical Gardens. When the Doctor, Melanie Bush, Hebe Harrison and Patricia arrived at the house with Tannus Vallon, Ron went to stay at Bernard's. (AUDIO: Chronomancer)
