Gingham was a form of cotton with stripe or cheque symbols.

The Sixth Doctor wore a single-breasted waistcoat of red and white gingham; most notably during the Valeyard's 'trial', (TV: The Mysterious Planet-The Ultimate Foe) and when helping River Song to defeat Golden Futures and Sperovores on London during 1703, (AUDIO: The Eye of the Storm) His successor, the Seventh Doctor, wore it before switching for a beige jumper with cherry question marks and turquoise zigzags.
