Villengard was a planet home to the Weapon Factories of Villengard, (TV: The Doctor Dances [+]Loading...["The Doctor Dances (TV story)"]) the home of the Villengard Corporation. (TV: Boom [+]Loading...["Boom (TV story)"])
It was located at the centre of the universe. (TV: Twice Upon a Time [+]Loading...["Twice Upon a Time (TV story)"]) It had a moon in its orbit, though by the time the First and Twelfth Doctors alongside Archibald Hamish Lethbridge-Stewart and the glass avatar of Bill Potts visited, it had been partially destroyed. (TV: Twice Upon a Time [+]Loading...["Twice Upon a Time (TV story)"])
In the 51st century the Villengard Corporation produced a variety of weapons and wartime technologies, including for Jack Harkness (TV: The Doctor Dances [+]Loading...["The Doctor Dances (TV story)"]), River Song (AUDIO: An Unearthly Woman [+]Loading...["An Unearthly Woman (audio story)"]), and the Anglican Marines. (TV: Boom [+]Loading...["Boom (TV story)"])
In the last months of the Last Great Time War, Villengard had a city home to various species, including Ogrons and Crespallions. The War Doctor enlisted the help of Dorium Maldovar to help him destroy the thirteen weapons factories of Villengard before the Dalek Fleet arrived to take control of them. Using a molecular fruit bomb, the Doctor transformed the factories into palm trees, creating a banana grove. (COMIC: The Whole Thing's Bananas [+]Loading...["The Whole Thing's Bananas (comic story)"]) The Ninth Doctor used this event as a justification for why Jack Harkness should carry a banana instead of a sonic blaster. (TV: The Doctor Dances [+]Loading...["The Doctor Dances (TV story)"])
When the Eleventh Doctor set a test to verify Amy's identity so that she could unlock his message a thousand years later, one of the possible questions was 'Where are sonic blasters made?'. The correct answer was Villengard. (GAME: TARDIS [+]Loading...["TARDIS (video game)"])
Eventually, the "good" Dalek Rusty came to the ruins of Villengard's weapons factories, where he set himself up inside a tower to fight off other Daleks seeking to destroy him. The ruins became infested with Kaled mutants without their casings. The Twelfth Doctor visited Rusty to access the Pathweb and learn the identity of Testimony's glass avatar. (TV: Twice Upon a Time [+]Loading...["Twice Upon a Time (TV story)"])
The Thirteenth Doctor had a conversation with the Moment in Villengard's banana groves. (PROSE: The Day of the Doctor [+]Loading...["The Day of the Doctor (novelisation)"])
Behind the scenes
- The return of Villengard in TV: Boom [+]Loading...["Boom (TV story)"], in the form of the Villengard Corporation, is one of many references in that story to past Steven Moffat scripts, as this was Moffat's first script since his showrunner era ended in December 2017.
- Beginning with TV: Boom [+]Loading...["Boom (TV story)"], due to Ncuti Gatwa's line reading as the Fifteenth Doctor, Villengard's pronunciation was significantly changed. Originally, Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor stressed the first syllable (so it sounded like VILL-en-gard), whereas Gatwa now began stressing the second syllable (Vil-LÉN-gard). According to Moffat, "We all liked it so much we elected to keep it."[1]
