Ellis was part of Don Chaney's gang. He and Mouse were stealing from their boss in 1938. He was also working with Cosmo Devine, as Cosmo was the person he was selling the things stolen from Chaney. After Bix Biro's message was broadcast, Devine wanted Ellis dead, but in the ensuring struggle, the captive Winkler was shot instead. He helped Charlotte Pollard escape.
