The Sinestran Kill was the first story in the eighth series of the Fourth Doctor Adventures, produced by Big Finish Productions.

Publisher's summary

When the Doctor decides to trace an anomalous energy signature on twentieth century Earth, he stumbles into an assassination attempt.

Gangland thugs are trying to murder a seemingly innocent shopkeeper, and it’s only the intervention of the Doctor and Ann Kelso – a WPC who happens to be on the scene – that prevents a tragedy.

But why do the gangsters want the shopkeeper dead? And what does this have to do with alien technology?

The first stages of a grand conspiracy are about to be revealed. And finding the answers will take Ann Kelso on a journey like no other.

References

  • The Doctor tracks the use of a warp field damper, which is 300 years too early for 1978.
  • A DNA coder transforms DNA, making it perfect for disguise. It can be disrupted by a stun gun.
  • Tony has a microparticle multiband communicator for sending messages between star systems.
  • Ann is WPC 166, which the Doctor says are his three lucky numbers.
  • Neilson was in UNIT Special Branch for five years.
  • The police emergency number is 999.
  • The insect Sinestrans work with Lemurans, a close cousin of theirs. Lemurans are empaths that can manipulate the subconscious of other beings and read minds. They can take human form and can allow Sinestrans to transfer their consciousness to take over cadavers, occupying those bodies. Without a Lemuran, the Sinestrans would not be able to return to their own bodies.
  • Lemurans themselves exist as a nebulous collection of charged sentient particles that must move from host to host.
  • Sinestrans use guns called "kill rods."
  • The Sinestran Syndicate is known for murder and extortion and many criminal conspiracies, including an alliance with an intergalactic group.
  • The Sinestrans use a cordolaine signal, which the Doctor notes is a Sontaran invention.
  • Blake's gang includes his wife Kathy, Jimmy (who was taken over by Spandrel months ago), Franky, Ray, and Benny.
  • Tony is a Gasorian. They are insect mercenaries who sometimes work for the Sinestrans. His DNA coder bracelet also subdues his murderous instincts.
  • The top floor of the police station is the anti-terrorism unit. The steel door is made of iron alloy, chromium, and manganese. The combination lock is changed once a year.
  • The Doctor holds the Sinestrans' bodies in an artron stasis field generated by the TARDIS.
  • The Doctor takes the Sinestrans to a justice planet, essentially a gaol, and Ann tells him he was only gone a minute.

Notes

  • Andrew Smith, who served as a metropolitan police officer in the anti-terrorism group for five years, incorporated elements of his time there into this story.
