He was particularly quick to call Tim a coward during military drills and the real-life conflict with the [[scarecrow]]s, only to be proved wrong. He and Tim joined the [[British Army]] in [[World War I]], serving on the Western Front. Tim eventually passed Hutchinson in rank and saved his life on the battlefield.

Hutchinson was a pupil at Hulton College in 1914. He was also a captain, which was a title for boys with special responsibilities at the school. He participated in the attempted murder of Timothy Dean. Dean only survived because his body had been altered by exposure to the Seventh Doctor's biodata.
