Series 4 of Torchwood known as Miracle Day, originally subtitled The New World is a 10-part serialized series of Torchwood scheduled for broadcast in summer 2011. It is being written by Russell T Davies and produced by BBC Wales and Starz Entertainment. It will star John Barrowman as Jack Harkness, Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper with new characters Mekhi Phifer as Rex Matheson, Alexa Havins as Esther Drummond, Bill Pullman as Oswald Danes and Arlene Tur as Dr. Vera Juarez. It will be set partially in Wales and the United States of America. The series covers an arc in which death ceases to exist on Earth.

Production

• Wales Online have reported that filming for next year’s series of Torchwood: The New World, will begin in the US on January 11th, 2011, lasting for 7 months.
• At the 2011 Television Critics Awards, Russell T. Davies announced that filming had been bumped up a day, starting on Monday, January 10.

Notes

• Andrew Cartmel has stated that he will be writing an episode for series 4, calling it "The Jinx" and for it to be broadcast on BBC One. This is yet to be confirmed.
• American Television writer Bryan Fuller was spotted in a meeting with Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner and is rumoured to be writing an episode.
• Writer Jane Espenson said that one of the characters names that was announced has been changed, and that any names that were previously announced have probably changed as well.
  • Esther and Oswald's last names have been changed from Katusi and Jones to Drummond and Danes.
• Ed Thomas will return as production designer for the UK unit. He will be joined by Greg Melton for the US unit.
• Makeup will be handled by Todd McIntosh & Costume will be handled by Shawna Trpcic.
• Torchwood: The New World has been changed to Torchwood: Miracle Day.

Broadcast dates

• Series 4 will premiere sometime in July 2011 on both BBC1 in the UK and Starz in the US.

Series synopsis

When C.I.A. agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy, he finds himself unearthing a threat which challenges the entire Human race. The answers seem to lie within an old, secret British institute, known only as Torchwood. But Torchwood was destroyed, years ago, and the keys to the institute are held by its only two survivors - former Police Officer Gwen Cooper, who has long since disappeared along with her husband and child, and the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness, a man whose history seems to stretch back centuries.

With Rex under attack from all sides, in both the US and the UK, he soon discovers there are forces at work within every level of society, determined to stop Torchwood's return. As a chain of events across the world links together the most disparate and unlikely individuals - including a surgeon, a killer, senators and CEOs - a new Torchwood team takes shape. But this time, the threat is much closer to home, as they realize that their greatest enemy is mankind itself...

One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep aging -- they get hurt and sick -- but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight. With all the extra people, resources are finite. It’s said that in four months’ time, the human race will cease to be viable. Rumours

• Alonso Frame will appear.
• James Marsters has stated he would like to return as John Hart for the new series.
• It has been hinted that Ianto, who was killed off in the Series 3 episode Children of Earth: Day Four may come back.
• Torchwood Three will not retrieve the SUV, strengthened by the fact that the SUV used for filming was sold at an auction at Bonhams on 24/02/10 for £18,000.
