There are several characters whose status as a companion is disputed, even if they have been recognized by official sources.  Fans have often argued for the exclusion of characters for several reasons, including lack of travel time in the TARDIS, lack of an invitation to adventure with the Doctor, appearances in only one adventure, etc.
