The Cybermen were a race of artificially modified human or near-humans, stated to be organic brains encased in metal forms. They tend to be commanded by Cyber-Lords.
History
A Cyberman army was buried under the ice in the Arctic Circle and had been for tens of thousands of years after being hit by a temporal storm. An excavation began to awaken the army, releasing Cybermats which in turn created Cyberslaves. The Eleventh Doctor arrived on May 4th 2010 and stopped their awakening. He blew up their base and put them back into stasis. (VG: Blood of the Cybermen)
The Doctor acquired a chest plate from one of these Cybermen and kept it in the TARDIS drawing room. (VG: TARDIS)
At some point in the far future, either during or after 4037, the Twelfth Cyber Legion monitored the galactic quadrant where Demons Run was located - causing them to be targeted by the Doctor and Rory Williams, who wiped out part of the Legion to send a message. (DW: A Good Man Goes to War)
Behind the scenes
- The Cybermen of Blood were not stated to be either Mondasian or the Cybus kind; they resemble the Cybus kind but without the Cybus logo. The Cybermen of Good Man were stated by Peter Hoar to be "different Cybermen" to the Cybus race, because they lacked the logo [1] - it is assumed for the purposes of the wiki that both stories have the same Cybermen (though Blood have their own variant logo).
- The Cybermen in these stories may be intended to be the Mondasians: they possess similar legions in the future (Good Man), Blood has them using Cyber-Mats and said to have conquered "races", and a "Who Fact" on Cybermen in the game refers solely to the Mondasian Cybermen (another on Cyber-Biology refers to "the Cybermen created by John Lumic" as if they're a different group).
- Cybermen resembling the Cybus kind but having Mondasian attributes also appear in
The Pandorica Opens, but they possess the Cybus logo and so are considered to be the Pete's World Cybermen for the purposes of this wiki. (In real life, the suits from 2006 are reused to save money)
- Their Electro Attack is a ranged weapon, resembling the attack seen in The Moonbase and The Tomb of the Cybermen.
- It is unknown how the Doctor acquired the chest plate seen in TARDIS. As the short script Wish You Were Here occurs directly after Blood of the Cybermen and leads directly into TARDIS (where the chest plate is seen), there is no time for the Doctor to take a chest plate and he is not seen carrying out out of the GSO base at the end of Blood. It is possible that he has encountered these Cybermen before in an unseen adventure.
