The Flood was the last regular Eighth Doctor comic strip to be published in Doctor Who Magazine. It saw the reappearance of the Cybermen in the strip, as well as several other people from the strip's history.
It is perhaps most notable as the story that would have shown the Eighth Doctor's regeneration. Russell T Davies personally asked DWM's staff is they would like to produce the scene and they initially agreed. However, they found no way to remove Destrii without killing her off, something they were unwilling to do, and the BBC would not allow the strip to feature her travelling with the Ninth Doctor. These factors meant the scene was cancelled and it ended with the Eighth and Destrii still together.

Notes
- This comic story was re-released in The Flood graphic novel.
- The graphic novel The Flood reveals that this story was originally going to feature the canonical regeneration into the Ninth Doctor. The magazine passed on this opportunity as they would not have been able to show Destrii's reaction to the regeneration; DWM originally intended for Destrii to travel with the Ninth Doctor in a series of adventures set before Rose, but this idea was vetoed by the BBC, who wanted only Rose Tyler to travel with the Ninth Doctor. Destrii's ultimate fate has yet to be chronicled.
- It would not be until DWM Issue 400 in October 2008 that the comic strip would introduce another non-TV, comic strip-only companion in Majenta Pryce.
- This story is ignored in a 'Who Fact' in the third Adventure Game, TARDIS. The fact claimed the Eighth Doctor was one of the few Doctors who never encountered the Cybermen. However, Who Facts are often given in an out-of-universe perspective.
Continuity
- The story features the return of MI6 and its director, Leighton Woodrow. They were previously used in DWM: The Fallen.
- The Cyber-Controller returns, having last been seen in DW: Attack of the Cybermen.
- The Cybermen again travel through time (DW: Earthshock, DW: Attack of the Cybermen).
- The Doctor mentions that radiation exposure is a good way to trigger a regeneration. He knows this because that was how the Third Doctor regenerated in DW: Planet of the Spiders. Exposure to radiation would also be the cause of the Tenth Doctor's regeneration. (DW: The End of Time)
- Cybermen from another universe invade Earth a few years after this attempt in the episodes (DW: Army of Ghosts / Doomsday)
- The Doctor absorbs energy from the Time Vortex again in DW: The Parting of the Ways.
- The Doctor's blue jacket, which he gained in DWM: Ophidius, is destroyed, only to be replaced with a green one before the events of EDA: Vampire Science.
- Izzy Sinclair, Maxwell Edison and Grace Holloway have cameo appearances. (DW: Doctor Who, DWM: End Game)
Timeline
- The Flood occurs after DWM: Sins of the Fathers
- The Flood occurs before TN: Rip Tide
