Veega lived with her son Rayo on the dusty mining planet Unity, at a small homestead where they raised chickens. She had her child with a man who was killed by the slave-hunting Nightraiders when the boy was young. Leela, a warrior and long time resident of Gallifrey, eventually came to Unity after she was cast into the Time Vortex by the War Master. There, she met Veega and Rayo, who was only a baby at the time. She lived with them in the years that followed and helped Veega to raise him, protecting both from danger in the process.

By the time Rayo was a young man, Veega mother was gravely ill with the dust flu. Although the illness was terminal, she hid this fact from both her loved ones. Near the end of Veega's life, Romana and Narvin, Leela's close friends from Gallifrey came to Unity looking for her, after they had been exiled from Gallifrey as traitors. Veega met both of them when they visited her home and confided in Romana that she was dying, but asked her not to tell Leela. While Leela was away in Unity City, hoping to find both Romana and Narvin's lost TARDIS and medicine to cure the dust flu, Veega died from the disease.

Later, when Romana devised a plan to use a Chameleon Arch to become human and protect her friends from the pursuit of the Daleks, Veega was the identity she pretended the device had created for her when Leela attempted to stop her. Romana claimed that her name was Veega and she did not recognise Leela. In reality, she did not use the Chameleon Arch at all and planned to give herself up to the Daleks under her real name and biology. Romana kept this secret and pretended to be Veega because she knew that Leela was too loyal and protective of her to ever allow such a plan. (AUDIO: Unity)

Behind the scenes

  • While working on the 2020 Time War: Volume Three story Unity, producer/director Scott Handcock and actress Louise Jameson discussed whether to make Veega and Leela's relationship overtly romantic and depict both as bisexual. Ultimately, it was decided to leave the exact nature of Leela and Veega's relationship open for interpretation. (BFX: Unity)
  • The precise nature of Veega's relationship with Rayo's deceased father was also unclear in the story, although Scott Handcock described him as Veega's husband in the extras. (BFX: Unity)
