New Year referred to the time at which a new year began. On Earth, 31 December was New Year's Eve, (TV: Doctor Who) and 1 January was New Year's Day. (TV: The End of Time, Resolution)

The Thirteenth Doctor once admitted to preferring New Year over Christmas, having been put off the latter holiday by the events of previous Christmases. Her New Year resolution was said to be the same every year: to defeat the Daleks. (PROSE: Scary Christmas and Unhappy New Year)

Operating according to time zones, parts of the world welcomed in the New Year one by one. (TV: Fragments)

On the night of 31 December, New Year's Eve 1999, Gigi Trattorio toasted the coming New Century. Furthermore, millennium celebrations were held, (PROSE: The Novel of the Film) though some believed that the new millennium would not come for another year. (PROSE: Millennial Rites, Escape Velocity)

On 3 January, birth rates would skyrocket across the Adipose nursery worlds as host species tried to stick to their New Year's resolutions to lose weight. (PROSE: Time Traveller's Diary)

Behind the scenes

Beginning in 2019, Doctor Who New Year Specials aired on 1 January, between seasons. Like the Christmas variant which came before it, the New Year Special is set on the holiday, New Year, and features themes relevant to New Year traditions.
