Publisher's summary

Finally reaching the head of the ship, Vienna and Passion find themselves exactly where the Master wants them. The Time Lord has more than revenge on his mind, however, and if they can't stop him, nothing in the universe will.

Plot

The Master gets the Kairos computer to scan him and learns that he has to leave the Time Vortex as soon as possible due to his molecular cohesion being critical, but he has a plan which will ensure his rebirth. Evading the Sparks as they near the front of the ship, Vienna and Passion reach the next seg only to be attacked by Kryle and detained by the Master. The Master puts Passion under mild hypnosis and shows Vienna the flight deck where he explains that he intends to steal her body after exploiting Passion, whom he takes to the vortex drive's reactor in the engine room. The ship's steering mechanism is inside a chamber flooded with radiation incapable of harming a Triangulum like herself.

Hypnotising Passion with the Heart of Tiamat, the Master has her increase the ship's speed to maximum and send it on a collision course to Earth whilst Kryle hunts Vienna, whom he realises has stolen his keys. Vienna defeats him in a fight, steals his gun and reaches the engine room where she threatens the Master into releasing Passion from the chamber in which he has left her trapped to die in the imminent crash. He attacks her until she points out that he intends to hijack her body, at which point he explains that she will be alive and conscious once he has stolen her body just as his current host is. She then threatens to flood the deck with radiation to kill them both, forcing the Master to give her the code to release Passion only for him to order Passion to kill her.

Passion reveals that, as a Triangulum, she is immune to hypnosis and has been playing along. She has actually set the ship to return to the pocket of dark time where the vortex drive reconstituted the Master. After shooting the Master, she and Vienna invite Kryle to join them, but he refuses to do so and they find a maintenance pod for them to escape in. Vienna orders the Sparks to evacuate everyone from the ship and makes an announcement warning everybody to get to their nearest escape pod. She and Passion get to the maintenance pod, but the Master loses corporeal form, takes control of the ship's systems and declares that everybody aboard will join him in oblivion.

Vienna and Passion head to the engine seg to manually decouple it from the rest of the ship and save everybody. The Master offers them immortality or whatever they wish to get them to stop, then orders Kryle to kill them. Vienna and Passion succeed, however, and escape the seg before it is detached whilst Kryle remains inside, begging the Master to save him. Taking the maintenance pod, Vienna and Passion escape and the Master disappears as the seg returns to the pocket of dark time and is destroyed. He reappears in the pod, but Passion uses the Heart of Tiamat to cast him out and then decides that she will stay with Vienna as her partner. Although Vienna believes that the Master is gone for good, he sings a song.

Cast

Worldbuilding

  • The Master reveals the Kairos was made by Drake Interplanetary.
  • The ship's steering mechanism is behind two feet of aluminium oxynitride.
  • According to the Master, despite his physical body being killed and possessed, Bruce is still conscious and screaming within the Master's psyche. Writer Robert Valentine wanted to show this in his previous story but was prevented by rights issues surrounding the character. (BFX: Passion) As a result, Bruce is not heard or named directly.
