Doctor Martha Jones worked as a medical student at the Royal Hope Hospital in London when she first met the Doctor. Eventually, after deciding to leave him, the Doctor ensured that she would find work with UNIT.

Biography

Early Life

Martha Jones was born in 1984 to Clive Jones and his wife Francine Jones. Martha had an older sister named Tish Jones. Three years later her younger brother Leo Jones was born. When Martha reached her twenties the Battle of Canary Wharf occured and during which her cousin Adeola Oshodi died. Sometime after that Martha became an aunty to Keisha Jones Leo's daughter was born. Her dad had an affair with Annalise. When her mother found out they split up and fought over family events.

Joining the Doctor

The twenty-four-year-old Martha was working at Royal Hope Hospital under a Mr Stoker when she encountered the Doctor. She encountered him (first) on the street, then gave him a cursory physical (and learnt that he had two hearts) then later helped him defeat a Plasmavore "Florence Finnegan" when the hospital was transported to the Moon by the Judoon. That evening, she was invited by the Doctor to join him on his travels. The Doctor insisted, however, that he had not brought Martha aboard the TARDIS as a replacement for his previous companion, Rose Tyler. (DW: Smith and Jones)

On her first trip the Doctor took her to Elizabethan London where she met famous writer William Shakespeare. But a race of witch-like aliens known as the Carrionites where trying to change reality. Martha, Shakespeare and the Doctor stopped them by using a spell against them. As they now where trapped inside a crystal ball. (DW: The Shakespeare Code)

On her second trip in the TARDIS the Doctor took her to New Earth where they landed in an area known as the Undercity. Martha soon was kidnapped by a young couple named Milo and Cheen. They informed her that they had 'kidnapped' her to travel in the Motorway's fast lane, for which they needed a third passenger. Travelling in the fast lane they discovered a race of crab-like creatures living on the ground level of the motorway; the Macra. Upon being saved from both the Macra and escaping the motorway Martha was dropped off at the New New York Senate. There she re-met up with the Doctor and Novice Hame, all three witnessed the death of the Face of Boe and his final words "You Are Not Alone". As they departed New Earth Martha demanded of the Doctor to tell the truth about his home (to which he had aluded), and discovered about the Last Great Time War. (DW: Gridlock)

The Doctor extended her trip in the TARDIS once more taking them to 1930s New York. Whilst in Hooverville they learnt of disappearances of many of its citizens in relation to the Empire State Building, when a man Mr Diagoras arrived searching for people to work in the sewers; the Doctor, Martha, Frank and Solomon volunteered. When they went down there they encountered a group of Pig Slaves that went running towards them. Martha, Solomon and the Doctor got out but Frank was taken by the slaves.

Martha landed up in a theatre dressing room where she met a woman called Tallulah who was looking for her boyfriend Laszlo. Later, whilst watching Tallulah on stage she saw a pig like humanoid. Chasing him off stage followed by Tallulah, she discovered it was Lazlo. Martha, however was taken by a group of Pig Slaves and assessed by a Dalek to be suitable for the "final experiment". She found that the "final experiment" was a plot by the Cult of Skaro led by Dalek Sec. She found that Dalek Sec had bonded itself with Mr Diagoras to become the first human Dalek. Eventually she escaped with the Doctor, and returned to Hooverville, where Dalek Jast and Dalek Thay attacked along with the pig slaves. The Doctor agreed to go with them if they would spare the people of Hoovervile, and as he left he gave Martha his psychic paper. She used this to get into the Empire State building with Tallulah, and managed to kill the Pig Slaves, although she seemed upset when she reflected that they had just been humans like themselves once. She was reunited with the Doctor and witnessed the human Daleks kill Jast and Thay after they killed Sec. However, Dalek Caan retaliated by killing the Human Daleks. Caan used an Emergency Temporal Shift to escape. (DW: Daleks in Manhattan / Evolution of the Daleks)

The Doctor then returned Martha home merely 24 hours following her start of travelling with him, however on as he departed he overheard a TV news story about a man "changing what it meant to be human" and so decided to accompany her to the opening night of Prof. Richard Lazarus device that could rejuvenate a human to youth. Upon discovering the disastrous effects on him Martha helped her sister Tish who was Lararus's PA and the other guests escape from the monster Lazarus had become. After he apparently died and then escaped Martha, Tish and the Doctor pursued him to a cathedral where she and Tish helped the Doctor lay a track for Lazarus, finally killing him. As Martha departed with the Doctor her mother tried to war her saying "Martha please the Doctor is dangerous. Mr Saxon said so himself". (DW: The Lazarus Experiment)

The Doctor and Martha answered a distress signal in the Toraji system, they found a crew and their ship falling towards the sun. But unknown to the crew the sun was possessed and it began to possess the crew. Martha phoned her mum as she thought she was going die. Unknown to Martha and Francine, Francine's phone was being bugged by Miss Dexter. However she and the Doctor were able to render assistance and depart safely. (DW: 42)

Martha and the Doctor encountered the Family of Blood at an unknown location, to allow them to escape the Doctor his himself and Martha on Earth in 1913. Martha spent a few months working as a main at a boys school as a maid, protecting the hidden Doctor (who hid himself using a Chameleon Arch). However the Family of Blood tracked them, eventually wreaking havoc on the town and school forcing Martha to make the man the Doctor had created for himself - John Smith to revert back to being the Doctor. (DW: Human Nature / The Family of Blood)

Martha and the Doctor went to an old house in Wester Drumlins where they encountered the Weeping Angels. They were sent back to 1960s London where Martha assisted the Doctor in helping Sally Sparrow save them. (DW: Blink)

Following a short pit-stop in Cardiff, the TARDIS took them to Malcassairo where she encountered and the Doctor re-met Captain Jack Harkness. She also encountered the last of humanity in the universe, being assisted by Professor Yana. Whilst assisting Yana Martha notices he owns a watch of similar design to that used by the Doctor with his chameleon arch and prompts Yana to open it, revealing the Master. He departed them using the Doctor's TARDIS. (DW: Utopia)

She used Captain Jack's Vortex manipulator to get to 21st-century Earth on the day after Mr Saxon had become Prime Minister. She, Jack and the Doctor worked out that Mr Saxon was an alias of the Master. She then went to her flat and they found out that he had been on Earth for 18 months and created his own past. Martha then escaped her flat after the trio discovered dynamite on her TV. It exploded as they escaped. She then phoned her family while driving to her mother's house. All her family were arrested but Leo. She then teleported aboard the Valiant were she witnessed the Doctor's age get accelarated and Jack get killed but resurrected. Her family were also taken prisoners on the Valiant. Martha was told by the Doctor to teleport to Earth and defeat the Master. (DW: The Sound of Drums)

Time away from the Doctor

Martha pretended to make a weapon that would kill the Master. She said that she had witnessed the Toclafane burn the islands of Japan. She spent a year on earth telling everyone to think of the Doctor at a specific time so that the Master could be defeated. This plan worked and the Master was shot by his wife Lucy Saxon. As a result of the destruction of the Master's Paradox Machine, only Martha, her family, and everyone else who was on board the Valiant remembered that year spent with the Master. Although the Doctor wanted her to stay with him, she decided that her family needed her more, and stayed on Earth to complete her training as a doctor.however, she gave the Doctor her enhanced mobile phone, saying that she would call him in the future when she needed him. (DW: Last of the Time Lords)

Later career

Joining UNIT and short tenure with Torchwood

The Doctor put in a good word for Martha at UNIT. At the request of Captain Jack, as a UNIT officer, she visited Torchwood 3 in Cardiff, where she became embroiled in their investigation of a private medical organization called The Pharm. Torchwood sent her into the Pharm as an undercover agent, but during the course of her investigation she was discovered and captured and the Mayflies were put into her body. Owen Harper saved her life using an alien surgical device but Aaron Copley killed him. Just as Copley was about to shoot Martha he was shot in the head by Jack Harkness. (TW: Reset) Martha witnessed Owen's return from the dead as an undead being means of the resurrection gauntlet and gave him a posthumous physical. "Death", a force possessing Harper aged Martha into an old woman. After the Death being vanished, she reverted to normal (TW: Dead Man Walking) She mended Harper's injured hand after, in a fit of self-destruction, he deliberately wounded it, after Jack decided to relieve him of duty at Torchwood. When Owen Harper was promoted back to Doctor, she left for UNIT, a few days after she had joined on (TW: A Day in the Death). She didn't go to Gwen Cooper's wedding because of work (Torchwood website).

Back at UNIT, her boyfriend, Thomas Milligan and Martha got engaged (DW: The Sontaran Stratagem), though he left Britain for a while to go to Africa (DW: The Poison Sky)

Reunion with the Doctor

Martha called the Doctor just as she, together with UNIT, was about to attack the ATMOS Factory which secretly formed a key part of a Sontaran invasion plan. At the time, she worked under the by-the-book Colonel Mace who was in charge of the operation. Later that day she warned Donna Noble to keep her family safe because of what had happened to her own family at the hands of the Master. A few minutes later she was kidnapped by two solders under Sontaran control and taken to her to a cloning pool, where they started copying her body. She then was put to sleep but kept alive as a her Clone was about to aid the Sontarans and needed access to her memories. (DW: The Sontaran Stratagem) Martha's clone died soon after the Doctor rescued the real Martha. While chatting with the Doctor and Donna inside the TARDIS after the defeat of the Sontarans, Martha turned down the Doctor's offer to let her travel again with him. As soon as she had made her refusal unknown force took control of the ship and dragged it into the Vortex (DW: The Poison Sky).

Martha walked out of the TARDIS onto the planet Messaline, remarking to Donna that even though she didn't want to travel with the Doctor any more, she loved the first steps of exploration on a new planet. On Messaline the Doctor was immediately taken hold of and his hand put in a machine to form his daughter, Jenny. Soon after, they were attacked by the Hath. Martha was separated from the Doctor and Donna and taken by the Hath. She saw an injured one named Hath Peck whom Martha helped, earning the Haths' trust, who then showed her a map of where they were. The Doctor was shown a corresponding map, and caused new passages and tunnels to appear on both maps, much to the Haths' surprise, who thought Martha was responsible. The Doctor then called her, and told her where they were heading. Martha found a way onto the planet's surface and took Hath Peck with her. On the surface Martha slipped into something like a pool of quicksand, but Hath Peck saved her life, sacrificing his own, to Martha's distress. Martha then saw the temple and was reunited with The Doctor, Donna and Jenny there. They discovered what the Humans and Hath were fighting over; the Source which would make the planet's surface habitable again. As the Hath and the Humans come running up the Doctor released the Source, however General Cobb was jealous and shot at the Doctor, wounding Jenny instead. When the Doctor said that there was a possibility she would come back to life, Martha shook her head and confirmed she was dead. Later, the Doctor took her back to Earth where she cheerfully said farewell to him and Donna, and was reunited with her fiancé, Thomas Milligan (DW: The Doctor's Daughter).

Defending the Earth

Martha had got promoted to an American contingent to help UNIT with Project Indigo. But when the Earth was transported into the Medusa Cascade the whole world went into panic. UNIT sent Martha to use technology that would help the Earth. General Sanchez gave her a parting gift of the Indigo prototype and the Osterhagen Key. Martha's emotions took control and sent her to her mother's house. Harriet Jones meanwhile had created a low level signal and it contacted her laptop. Together they all contacted the Doctor and summoned him to fight the Daleks.(DW: The Stolen Earth)

Alternate realities

Donna's World

If Donna Noble had turned right for a job interview instead of turning left, Martha would have been working in the Royal Hope Hospital and met Sarah Jane and Luke Smith, as well as Maria Jackson and Clyde Langer. As the hospital was moved to the moon, the oxygen ran out it caused every one in the hospital, including Martha, were left to die of suffication. She gave her last piece of air to fellow student Oliver Morgenstern. (DW: Turn Left)
