After escaping from the Superiors' prison, the Gentleman, a disembodied memetic entity, embedded himself in a ship.

Some years later, however, he accidentally crashed the ship into "a piece of crystallised memetic airspace" after sailing it off the edge of a map. Detecting that he was pinned in place, the Superiors sent Chris Cwej, Larles and Kwol to the ship to retrieve the Gentleman and take him back to the Base of Operations for trial. The Gestalt also directed Kady Williams towards the downed ship. However, the Gentleman was able to manipulate the interior architecture of the ship, (PROSE: Ring Theory) not unlike an anarchitect, (PROSE: The Book of the War) filling it with replicas of rooms and things from the four time travellers' worst fears, most painful memories, and assorted nightmares. They wandered the labyrinthine ship for weeks, no longer able to reach the exit, until the Gentleman stopped toying with them and revealed himself. Eventually, they defeated and killed the Gentleman by tricking him into becoming a vessel for the Gestalt, whose many minds overpowered his own will. (PROSE: Ring Theory)
