The Gentleman was a unique Cwej-clone whom the Superiors attempted to turn into a "memetic energy weapon", although he soon proved hard to control. After escaping the Superiors' prison during V-Time, he was ultimately destroyed by the original Cwej with the help of Larles, Kwol and the Gestalt's host Kady Williams after briefly becoming the Gestalt's host himself. Becoming the Gentleman[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Gentleman used to be "a Cwej". He was experimented on by the W-Time Superiors and thrown back in time in a transitional form, "between this world and the next", appearing as a "screaming piece of black muck, twisted around like a sinewy spider's web". The Superiors of a pre-W-Time era found the creature and decided to experiment on it further to create a "memetic energy weapon". They made a deal with Filin, a Gendar who was the current host of the Gestalt, to perform the operation in exchange for the Superiors preventing a great catastrophe that would wreck Filin's home planet. Filin agreed, to the Gestalt's and her own immediate regret when she started to perform the procedure and realised that it was painful for the Cwej. In his new form, "the Gentleman" sent aggressive psychic messages to Filin throughout her life, pledging to destroy the planet Gendar in revenge for what Filin had done to him. (PROSE: Ring Theory)

Imprisonment and escape[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Gentleman proved too hard to control to be of use to the Superiors, who banished him to their prison-world, once again with the help of the Gestalt. During or shortly before the V-Time era, the Gentleman managed to escape and possessed a spaceship. However, he soon crashed it into a "crystallised memetic airspace" after sailing it off the edge of a map. (PROSE: Ring Theory)

Death[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Superiors detected that the Gentleman was trapped in a stable location and directed Chris Cwej, Larles and Kwol there, with orders to capture the Gentleman and bring him back to the Base of Operations for trial. The Gestalt, eager to put right its old wrong, also directed its latest host Kady Williams to the ship. Controlling the labyrinthine interior of the ship and using the intruders' fears and painful memories against them (notably taking the form of people from their past, such as Vlarkes and Bill), the Gentleman kept Kady, Cwej, Larles and Kwol wandering the ship's interior for weeks before he finally revealed himself. Though he attempted to sow distrust between the two parties, they managed to work together and tricked the Gentleman to his doom by getting him to accept a deal whereby he would let Cwej, Larles and Kwol leave safely if Kady surrendered the Gestalt to him. After absorbing the Gestalt, the Gentleman's mind was overwhelmed by the many wills making up the Gestalt. Forcing the Gentleman to create an exit to the ship, they ended up shattering his will entirely, causing the entity to finally die and vanish into smoke. However, Kady cautioned that since memetic weapons were essentially ideas, they could be very hard to kill. (PROSE: Ring Theory)
