Dr Who Christmas Time Machine Game (game)
Dr Who Christmas Time Machine Game was a simple board game included on the back of the 1979 Doctor Who Candy Favourites chocolate set by Goodies. The chocolates themselves were depictions of the characters in the game, with the silhouettes on the cut-out gamepieces corresponding to them, although the edible figures themselves were too large to fit on the board and be used in the game itself. The box set was released in 1979.[1]
Summary
The Fourth Doctor in his TARDIS, a Cyberman, a Dalek, and K•9 race through an interplanetary landscape.
Gameplay
Cut out spinner and counters. Pierce hole in centre of spnner and inset used match to half way. See side of box for instructions.
INSTRUCTIONS: Place counters on start places.
Players take turns to spin. Whatever colour it lands on[nb 1], the player with that colour moves forward one or two places. If it lands on the colour of the player that has spun the disc, he moves and spins again;
Characters
Worldbuilding
- A Cyberman is featured in some way.
- The landscape through which the racers travel includes a blue planetoid, a pink planetoid, a golden planetoid, and a green planetoid, all of which delay the travellers if landed upon. Also visible are a ringed brown planetoid and a ringed pink planetoid.
Story notes
- Although the presence of K•9 and the date of the story's release leave no doubt about the intended identity of the titular "Dr Who" as Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor, no physical depicting of the Doctor is given, with his game piece instead depicting the TARDIS.
Continuity
- The Dalek is a Silver Dalek, closest in appearance to the ones seen in TV: Death to the Daleks! [+]Loading...["Death to the Daleks! (TV story)"], though with some minor differences in colour scheme, most notably its sense globes being the same silver colour as the rest of its body instead of black.
- The Cyberman mostly resembles the type introduced in TV: Revenge of the Cybermen [+]Loading...["Revenge of the Cybermen (TV story)"], although its cranium bulge is coloured orange and its eye-pods are red, traits not exhibited by these Cybermen on television. It also has a vertical torso sleeve matching the Cybermen introduced in TV: The Invasion [+]Loading...["The Invasion (TV story)"], thus corresponding with the hybrid variant seen in GAME: Doctor Who Trump Card Game [+]Loading...["Doctor Who Trump Card Game (game)"].
- The Fourth Doctor is travelling with a K•9 model. After leaving Leela and K9 Mark I behind in TV: The Invasion of Time [+]Loading...["The Invasion of Time (TV story)"], the Doctor had revealed himself to be in possession of a K9 Mark II. TV: The Ribos Operation [+]Loading...["The Ribos Operation (TV story)"] would then pick up with the Doctor and K9 in the TARDIS as they were reluctantly joined by Romana I. Though the two stories could be viewed as flowing directly into one another, The Ribos Operation was not explicit about being the Doctor's first adventure with the new K9, and several other stories would go on to feature the Doctor travelling alone with K9, starting with PROSE: Timevault [+]Loading...["Timevault (short story)"].
