Series 10 of Doctor Who was revealed in the BBC Worldwide Annual Review on 14 July 2015: "During the year matters under review included plans to launch the global genre brands BBC First in Australia and New Zealand on Foxtel and BBC Brit and BBC Earth in Poland; and investments in The Musketeers S3 and Doctor Who S10."[1] On 6 November 2015, in interview with the Radio Times, Steven Moffat elaborated: "We're making a full series. I can confirm that I am making a full series of 12 episodes, plus a Christmas special. I don't know when it goes out. That is up to someone else."[2]

Moffat also said that "Peter Capaldi is going nowhere".[3] He teased the possible return of Missy.[4]

Only a Christmas special will air in 2016, with the rest of the series beginning broadcast in spring 2017. The tenth series will be Moffat's final series as showrunner, after which Chris Chibnall will take on the role. [5]

Moffat confirmed an extra episode to the Daily Record on 4 February 2016: "I have fourteen Doctor Whos and three Sherlock films." [6]

The Radio Times stated that as of 8 February 2016, auditions for Jenna Coleman's replacement had not started yet.[7] On 23 April, it was announced via a short trailer titled "Friend From the Future"[8] that the Doctor's new companion will be "Bill", played by Pearl Mackie. Mackie described her character as "wicked" and "cool, strong, sharp, a little bit vulnerable with a bit of geekiness thrown in".[9] The first readthrough began on June 14.[10]

Writers

The Radio Times reported Mark Gatiss was writing an episode for series 10, possibly a sequel to his series 9 episode, Sleep No More.[13] On June 4, 2016, Gatiss himself confirmed that he was writing an episode.[14]

On 30 November 2015, Steven Moffat revealed Jamie Mathieson had "just been in and pitched a brilliant idea, a brilliant new monster."[15]

Steven Moffat announced Series 10 would have "two writers who have never written Doctor Who before" and teased, "If I told you their names, your brain would explode."[16]

On 14 June, the BBC announced details of the first and second episodes, revealing that they would be written by Steven Moffat and Frank Cottrell Boyce respectively. The release also revealed two further writers for the tenth series: Sarah Dollard and Mike Bartlett.[11]

Directors

In a video posted on his Facebook page, Peter Jackson teased that he might be directing an episode.[17]

It was later announced that the first episode of the series would be directed by Lawrence Gough.[11]

Filming

In 2015, production designer Michael Pickwoad said in an interview on the podcast Radio Free Skaro that work on the new series "won't start until well into the New Year", and that he expected to start filming in May.[18] Peter Capaldi said filming would begin "sometime...next year."[19]

On 2 February 2016, the Radio Times reported filming would begin in May 2016.[7] This proved not to be, as Peter Capaldi said at a Comic Con in Dallas on the 4th of June, "We start in two weeks."[20] The precise date was later revealed to be the 20th of June.[11]

To avoid online leaks, the production team used the codeword "Mean Town", an anagram of "Ten Woman", when talking about Bill, casting director Andy Pryor revealed to the Radio Times. This was a reference to the fact that Bill is the companion of series 10.[21]
