• 18 - News reporter turned actor Alex MacIntosh who made a cameo as himself in Day of the Daleks is born.

• Construction of the eccentric Welsh resort village of Portmeirion begins. Best known as the filming location for the 1960s TV series The Prisoner, the village would also be used as a filming location for the Doctor Who serial The Masque of Mandragora.
