Shadow Master was created in the Land of Fiction from the shadow of the War Master as a by product of travels to collect weapons for the Last Great Time War. He managed to escape once the Master entered the Wild Wood. He followed the Master to watch him. He wasn't able to see his form in Hobgoblin's mirror and started to reveal himself in the Sea Witch's layer. He then escaped from him. He later attended a confrontation at high noon where he became more corporeal in front of his mind. He was able to survive the devil's bullets. He gained influence and a reputation in the land. He fell in love with Poetry eventually asking her to marry him. Confronting the Master, he saw the Devil kill Poetry destabilising the realm. The Master got him to summon the Shadow version of The Master's TARDIS. He had to locate where Poetry's soul had been the centre of the Land, using the power of the TARDIS to create a new star at that point. He buried Poetry on Mount Olympus. He banished the Master and vowed to keep an eye out for him. The Mater used the Hobgoblin's mirror to destroy the Shadow Master due to the goodness in his soul, returning the Shadow Master to the purgatory of the Land of Fiction waiting to be written in a story.
