The Queen of the May or May Queen was a title conferred upon some young human women in at least 17th century Britain. These women were at the centre of springtime celebrations involving maypoles. Will Chandler, a native of the 17th century, seemed to be of the opinion that May Queens were universally burned to death during the ceremonies.

Tegan Jovanka was once forced by Sir George Hutchinson to be the Queen of the May in a war games simulation that happened in Little Hodcombe in 1984. She escaped being burnt at the maypole because she was replaced at the last minute by a straw figure. (DW: The Awakening)

In real life, it's unclear that May Queens were actually sacrificed during springtime celebrations.
