Clare Keightley was a student of Cambridge University in 1979.
Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]
Clare was born in Fallowfield. As a young girl, she was discouraged from reading books by her grandmother, who bitterly told her grandchild that the "books won't take [her] anywhere". However, Clare persisted with learning, having fully memorised the periodic table before she joined primary school.
After completing sixth form in Manchester, Clare was employed as an undergraduate at Cambridge during May 1979, though came to feel indignant within only weeks due to how the other students would be coy with her due to her gender. Even when she managed to break the ice with them so that they treated her more as an equal, Clare still found Chris Parsons bumbling around her, which caused her to develop a crush on him. The Shada conundrum[[edit] | [edit source]]
By October 1979, Clare got a job at a research centre in the United States of America, and had to leave Cambridge behind. Three days before she was due to leave, (PROSE: Shada) Clare aided Chris in his attempts to analyse The Worshipful and Ancient Law of Gallifrey, which he had borrowed from Professor Chronotis. They later helped the Doctor defeat Skagra's plans. During the adventure, through telepathy, Chronotis transferred in her mind the knowledge to fix his broken TARDIS. (WC: Shada) According to one account, the adventure on Shada ended with Chris and Clare proclaiming their love for one another, and they were soon engaged to be married, with Clare turning down her new job to be with Chris.
