Dear was a word that could be used to express affection towards another person. A variation upon it was "dearie".

The Tremas Master called the Fifth, Sixth and Twelfth Doctors "Dear Doctor". The Eleventh Doctor sometimes used "dear" affectionately. When the Doctor's TARDIS gave him a new sonic screwdriver, the Doctor said "thanks, dear". (TV: The Eleventh Hour [+]Loading...["The Eleventh Hour (TV story)"]) The Doctor also greeted Winston Churchill with "dear" as the latter phoned the TARDIS.
