First published in 1991, the Virgin New Adventures, continued the adventures of the Seventh Doctor and Ace after the TV story Survival; later installments introduced new companions like Bernice Summerfield, who became the range's main protagonist in 1997 when Virgin lost the license for Doctor Who fiction.

In 1994, Virgin Books began a series of novels featuring past Doctors, called the Missing Adventures. One of these featured the Seventh Doctor and his companions.
