The Doctor's giddy aunt

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

The Seventh Doctor thought he might have once had a giddy aunt, but he mused that she was "probably metaphorical". (AUDIO: Forever Fallen [+]Loading...["Forever Fallen (audio story)"])

Indeed, "Oh, my giddy aunt" was a favourite phrase of the Second Doctor's. This was a common exclamation of surprise for him. Whereabouts[[edit] | [edit source]]

Both the Seventh and Eleventh Doctors acknowledged having had an uncle, whom the latter claimed was known simply as "the Uncle", although the Doctor did not touch upon his marital status on these occasions. (TV: Time and the Rani [+]Loading...["Time and the Rani (TV story)"], GAME: The Eternity Clock [+]Loading...["The Eternity Clock (video game)"]) Through the process of regeneration, a Time Lord could "upgrade" into a Time Lady, (TV: The Witch's Familiar [+]Loading...["The Witch's Familiar (TV story)"]) being able to transform from man to woman and vice versa. (TV: The Doctor's Wife [+]Loading...["The Doctor's Wife (TV story)"] etc.)

By one account, High Chancellor Flavia was the Doctor's aunt. (AUDIO: Blue Boxes [+]Loading...["Blue Boxes (audio story)"]) After the end of the Time War left him as the apparent last of the Time Lords, (TV: Dalek [+]Loading...["Dalek (TV story)"]) the Ninth Doctor told Rose Tyler that his whole family died along with his planet. (TV: Father's Day [+]Loading...["Father's Day (TV story)"]) Later on, the Eleventh Doctor claimed that he didn't even have an aunt, in conversation with Amelia Pond. (TV: The Eleventh Hour [+]Loading...["The Eleventh Hour (TV story)"])

In fact, the Thirteenth Doctor noted she no longer had any family at all; (TV: The Woman Who Fell to Earth [+]Loading...["The Woman Who Fell to Earth (TV story)"]) something the Fifteenth Doctor was much less sure about, (TV: The Legend of Ruby Sunday [+]Loading...["The Legend of Ruby Sunday (TV story)"]) though he worried, deep down, that they might all be gone. (TV: Space Babies [+]Loading...["Space Babies (TV story)"], The Devil's Chord [+]Loading...["The Devil's Chord (TV story)"])

Flavia once published Tales from the Matrix - True Stories from TARDIS Logs Retold for Time Tots under the name "Loom Auntie Flavia". (PROSE: Apocrypha Bipedium [+]Loading...["Apocrypha Bipedium (short story)"])

Other realities[[edit] | [edit source]]

The Doctor's aunt in the Daft Dimension. (COMIC: The Daft Dimension 509 [+]Loading...["The Daft Dimension (DWM 509 comic story)"])

In the Daft Dimension, the Doctor did indeed have an aunt whom he referred to as his "giddy aunt", after having been on a waltzer that left her dizzy. (COMIC: The Daft Dimension 509 [+]Loading...["The Daft Dimension (DWM 509 comic story)"])

Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

Flavia may be the Doctor's loom aunt, by some accounts, but the Five Doctors novelisation [+]Loading...["The Five Doctors (novelisation)","the ''Five Doctors'' novelisation"] refers to her as "shrewd", intelligent and strong-willed; hardly "giddy". Later on, The Eight Doctors [+]Loading...["The Eight Doctors (novel)"] even has her explain how much she dislikes ceremony.

However, this is somewhat at odds with her characterisation in Apocrypha Bipedium [+]Loading...["Apocrypha Bipedium (short story)"].
