York family

The York family was an English Royal Family in the 15th century.

The first King of England to come from the family was Edward IV. He had two brothers: (the future) Richard III and George, Duke of Clarence. His wife was Elizabeth Woodville and they had two children together who were nicknamed the Princes in the Tower. According to one account, they were both girls.

After Edward unexpectedly died, his eldest child briefly became Edward V. After Richard discovered that the Princes were girls, he declared the marriage of Edward and Elizabeth illegitimate and had them locked in the Tower of London. As such, he was then crowned Richard III. (AUDIO: The Kingmaker)

Richard ruled England for two years from 1483 to 1485 until he was defeated and killed by Henry Tudor in the Battle of Bosworth who then became Henry VII. (PROSE: Sometime Never...) Another account stated that it was William Shakespeare who met his end in the battle and Richard took the place of Shakespeare in 1597. (AUDIO: The Kingmaker)

Later, Elizabeth of York (daughter of Edward IV) married Henry VII to unite the warring Yorks and Tudors. They had four children: Henry VIII, Arthur Tudor, Margaret Tudor and Mary Tudor. (TV: The Coach with the Dragon Tattoo)
