Tudor

The Tudors were a royal family that ruled England during the late 15th, 16th and early 17th centuries.

History[[edit] | [edit source]]

Henry VII became the first Tudor King of England in 1485 after defeating Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth. (AUDIO: The Kingmaker) He married Elizabeth of York and had four children: Henry VIII, Arthur Tudor, Margaret Tudor and Mary Tudor.

Henry VIII became king in 1509 when his father died. (TV: The Coach with the Dragon Tattoo) He was known for having six wives, (TV: Let's Kill Hitler) although he had two more: Amy Pond (TV: The Power of Three) and Marilyn Monroe. (PROSE: A Hundred Words from a Civil War) The Reformation began during his reign and he declared himself head of the English church. (PROSE: Eye of the Gorgon) According to a document in a cache of Tudor parchments, as Henry VIII was the illegitimate grandson of an archer, he had no right to the throne. (PROSE: Have You Seen This Man?)

Henry VIII died in 1547 and was succeeded by Edward VI, (TV: The Coach with the Dragon Tattoo) a Protestant (AUDIO: The Marian Conspiracy) who ruled until 1553 when he died at the age of 15. (TV: The Coach with the Dragon Tattoo)

The Tudor dynasty was briefly interrupted in 1553 when Lady Jane Grey came to the throne for nine days from 10 to 19 July before she was deposed by Mary I. (TV: Lost in Time)

Mary I was a Catholic and married King Philip II of Spain. She believed she was pregnant by him but in actuality was experiencing a phantom pregnancy. She died in 1558. (AUDIO: The Marian Conspiracy)

Elizabeth I succeeded Mary I. In 1562, she married the Tenth Doctor. (TV: The End of Time, The Day of the Doctor) She defeated the Spanish Armada which she believed to have "saved [her] realm". She died in 1603 (PROSE: Birthright) and was succeeded by James VI of Scotland, known as James I in England. He was a Stuart, and so the Tudor dynasty ended with Elizabeth's death. (GAME: The Gunpowder Plot)
