- PROSE: Doctor Who and the Curse of Peladon was first published.
- 1 January - Actress Andrea Lowe was born.
- 4 January - TV: Robot Episode 2 was first broadcast.
- 11 January - TV: Robot Episode 3 was first broadcast.
- 16 January - The BBC's Audience Research Dept. filed an Audience Research Report on TV: Robot Episode 1. The episode received a Reaction Index of 53. Reaction to new Doctor Tom Baker was mixed, with some respondents saying he would take some getting used to.[1]
- 18 January - TV: Robot Episode 4 was first broadcast. Although there were two more UNIT stories over the next year, this episode marked the end of the Doctor's continuous involvement with UNIT.

- 30 August - TV: Terror of the Zygons Episode 1 was first broadcast, opening Season 13 and marking the first autumn start for a Doctor Who season since 1968-69. The serial was originally intended to end Season 12, but was pushed back to make a fall season start feasible.

- 13 September - TV: Terror of the Zygons Episode 3 was first broadcast.
- 20 September - TV: Terror of the Zygons Episode 4 was first broadcast. Ian Marter left the series as a regular with this episode, although he returned a few weeks later for a guest appearance in TV: The Android Invasion. This was also Nicholas Courtney's final regular appearance as Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart; he next played the character in the 1983 serial TV: Mawdryn Undead. Although UNIT returned in The Android Invasion and the Doctor was on a UNIT mission in TV: The Seeds of Doom, this was the last appearance of the Brigadier and marked as the official end of the UNIT era.
