1866 was a key year for time travel in England.

It was the year in which Victoria Waterfield began travelling with the Second Doctor and Jamie McCrimmon. Her father and Theodore Maxtible made contact with the Daleks before or during this year and opened a "time corridor" to 1966, which was eventually used to bring the Doctor and his Scottish companion back to 2 June 1866. There, the Daleks eventually killed the senior Waterfield, leaving the Doctor to look after the parentless Victoria. (TV: The Evil of the Daleks)

The trio returned to this year on 5 June and encountered Sir Charles Westbrooke and his reanimated experimental subjects. (PROSE: The Age of Ambition)

Meanwhile, the Fifth Doctor was also in England, having been separated from his companion, Nyssa, who was sent one year forward in time. Over the course of 1866 and 1867, he became a well known and respected figure in London scientific circles in spite of his youthful appearance. He resided in 107 Baker Street until being reunited with Nyssa on 14 November 1867. (AUDIO: The Haunting of Thomas Brewster)

Still elsewhere in England, the eventual writer of The Time Machine —  Herbert George Wells — was born in Bromley on 21 September. (TV: Timelash)
