Eleventh Doctor
GERONIMO!
The Eleventh Doctor is the name given to the eleventh incarnation of the Time Lord known as the Doctor.
After the Tenth Doctor absorbed a great deal of radiation, he regenerated into a new incarnation in a violent regeneration that set the TARDIS on fire and sent it on a crash course. The new incarnation was momentarily worried that he had regenerated as female due to having longer hair until he confirmed the presence of an Adam's apple, checked to see if he still had legs, mentioned "I've had worse" when it came to his nose, seemed unsettled by his jaw, and again bemoaned the fact that he was not ginger (referencing DW: Children in Need Special).
At present, very little is known about him other than that his first confirmed companion is a young female named Amy Pond [1] and that he dresses in a tweed jacket, bow tie, rolled up trousers and black boots, and that this incarnation appears to have a more youthful physical appearance than any of his predecessors. The Doctor's TARDIS appears to have also undergone some cosmetic changes coinciding with his emergence, the full extent of which are as yet unknown (though it is known that the First Doctor's St John ambulance badge will be restored to the TARDIS).

Regeneration
The Tenth Doctor regenerated after absorbing a vast amount of radiation; due to this, he released too much energy during regeneration and caused severe damage to the TARDIS. When the Eleventh Doctor was born, he first checked all his body parts were there, and was initially led to believe by his long hair that he was a girl (and like the Tenth Doctor upon his birth was disappointed to not be ginger). He then remembered that the TARDIS was crashing back down to Earth. He reacted to the crash with mad glee, calling out "GERONIMO!" as it went down. (DW: The End of Time)
Behind the Scenes
- After months of speculation, David Tennant, the actor cast as the Tenth Doctor in 2005, announced in October 2008 that he would be leaving the role as of the final gap year special scheduled for broadcast in early 2010. This precipitated several months of intense media speculation as to the identity of the actor to be chosen to play the Eleventh Doctor. English actor Matt Smith who, at 26, will become the youngest actor to date to play the Doctor (succeeding previous record-holder Peter Davison), was officially confirmed by the BBC as the new Doctor on 3rd January 2009. Mofatt had attempted to find an older actor to play the role, but he felt that Smith was the right man. [2]
- As of August 2009 it had not yet been confirmed whether Smith would appear as the new Doctor in any of the David Tennant specials, though it was assumed he will take part in a regeneration sequence for the final special (DW: The End of Time). A BBC article on the production team at the Celtic Media Festival suggested the sequence would included in the final Tennant special, which it was.
- Smith was seen filming in Cardiff in October, it is thought that he is portraying an old and wise doctor with a young body. However, some leaked dialogue suggests that this younger looking Doctor will have trouble being taken seriously, to the point of his frustration, suggesting a shorter tempered personality much like the Sixth Doctor. - His first companion Amy Pond will be played by Karen Gillan, who portrayed the Soothsayer in DW: The Fires of Pompeii. [3]
- The comic strip The Crimson Hand, being published in Doctor Who Magazine from issue 416 in December 2009, has been announced by DWM as the last strip to feature the Tenth Doctor. Presumably this means DWM will begin strips featuring the Eleventh Doctor in the early months of 2010 depending on how many issues the Crimson Hand arc covers. Similarly, the American comic book publisher, IDW Publishing, announced at the New York Comic Con in February 2009 that it will begin publishing original comic book adventures featuring the Eleventh Doctor as of issue 18 of Doctor Who Ongoing, scheduled for publication in December 2010.
- BBC Books has announced that the first novels featuring the Eleventh Doctor in the New Series Adventures line are scheduled for release in April 2010.
- The BBC released a trailer for Series 5 on the BBC website. Among other things, the trailer shows the Doctor firing a gun (at what or at whom is not known as yet), kissing a woman (possibly Amy Pond), falling to the floor of the TARDIS with what appears to be River Song falling on top of him, attacking a Dalek, punching a man in the jaw, and again uttering "Geronimo", suggesting this is likely to become the new Doctor's catchphrase, much as "Fantastic" was for the Ninth Doctor, or "Allons-y" for the Tenth Doctor.
