Stan Lee (28 December 1922[1]-12 November 2018[2]) was the former Publisher, Editor-in-Chief, President, and Chairman of Marvel Comics. When Doctor Who Magazine was produced by Marvel, he was credited as its publisher.
Lee was a legendary figure in the world of comics and publishing, creating such seminal characters as Spider-Man, the Incredible Hulk, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four and many more. He is credited with building Marvel Comics from a small imprint to the major multimedia company it is now. He is also credited with bringing the "flawed hero" to superhero comics, invigorating the genre and paving the way for such reexaminations of the superhero story such as Alan Moore's Watchmen.

In The Origin of Doctor Who Magazine, a comedic look at the inception of Doctor Who Magazine printed in DWM 544, Dez Skinn, shortly before pitching Doctor Who Magazine to Marvel UK in real life, has a nightmare about Stan Lee being asked to write Doctor Who comics, only to completely misunderstand and turn in Timelord, an American-style comic-book where the titular character is a doctor by day who, by night, becomes an avenging superhero wielding a sonic sceptre.
