During the summer of 1897, the Giant's Heart was hidden in the Tower of London until it could be set into the royal crown. Vastra, Jenny Flint, and Strax were tasked with protecting it. The Doctor arrived and replaced it with a different alien gem. (PROSE: The Giant's Heart)

At some point during this year The Dread, a large ship fuelled by oil, caught fire in Cardiff Bay. The resultant blaze destroyed any trace of the ship and its crew, and the oil spilling into the water created a large ecological disaster.
