Nicholas Blake
Corporal Nicholas Blake (PROSE: Legacies) was an NCO in the British Army. He took part in the fight against the Great Intelligence and its robot Yeti in the London Underground. During this, he was often partnered with Craftsman Stephen Weams, who came from a different branch of the army. Both regretted fighting the Yeti with minimal firepower but Blake also morosely thought their disorganised and disparate forces, which included civilians, would be unable to face a direct assault.
Blake was unaware of what the Yeti really were, though he was aware Travers said he'd met them in Tibet. He mocked Weams' belief they were aliens and thought this was an attack by a foreign country.
While attempting to recover the Second Doctor's TARDIS, Blake, Colonel Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart and several soldiers were pinned down in a Covent Garden yard by the Yeti, where all the soldiers expect Blake and the Colonel were killed. He and the Colonel took refuge in a warehouse, where they hid on top of some boxes. However, Blake was dragged away and killed by one of the Yeti. (TV: The Web of Fear)
In an alternative timeline, Blake survived the incursion in London, and was serving under Colonel Pemberton when he was killed in Croydon. (PROSE: Legacies)
Behind the scenes
Blake refers to the army in the Underground as "a right old Fred Karno's Army". Fred Karno was a music hall performer and "Fred Karno's Army" was a term for the volunteer brigades in World War I, impyling they were chaotic and disorganised.
