Talk:Charlotte Pollard
Maternal Grandmother?[[edit source]]
Charley's "maternal grandmother" is said to be "Ermentrude Elspeth Pollard" cited as The Fall of the House of Pollard. However, Charley was born in 1912. Maternal grandmother would mean Louisa Pollard's mother, but Ermentrude's last name, Pollard, would imply Richard Pollard's mother, making her Charley's paternal grandmother. Is this a typo or there a legitimate reason for it, such as both of Charley's parents having the same surname? Or possibly even just a continuity error? Mewiet ☎ 14:19, August 19, 2014 (UTC)
Charlotte or Charley?[[edit source]]
According to T:CHAR NAMES, we're meant to title articles like these with the name by which the character is most often known. The title for Amy Pond is not Amelia Pond, despite Amelia being her birth name. Is Charlotte used often enough to allow for "Charlotte Pollard" as the title, rather than "Charley Pollard"?

- She always introduces herself as Charlotte Pollard in every appearance, then says call me Charley, she is never referenced as Charley Pollard so would not be right to call the article Charley Pollard, whereas Amy is almost always referred to as Amy Pond, not Amelia Pond. If this article would change then you would have to change Melanie Bush to Mel Bush as Mel is referred to as Mel more often than Melanie. Adric♥Nyssa∩Talk? 10:51, December 11, 2015 (UTC)
- And the title of her spin-off series is "Charlotte Pollard". JagoAndLitefoot ☎ 16:28, December 11, 2015 (UTC)
She actually calls herself "Charley Pollard" almost as often as she calls herself "Charlotte Pollard". Two examples are The Natural History of Fear and Caerdroia, alongside the aforementioned Chimes of Midnight but I’m sure there’s many others. She’s called Charley more than Charlotte. So like Amy Pond and Flip Jackson, I would say she should be called Charley Pollard. SarahJaneFan ☎ 15:08, May 15, 2020 (UTC)
- Here's a list of the uses of each in the first few stories, with brackets showing the number of times Charley herself used the name:
Story | Charlotte Pollard | Charley Pollard |
---|---|---|
Storm Warning | 3 (3) | 0 |
Sword of Orion | 0 | 1 (1) |
The Stones of Venice | 0 | 1 (1) |
Minuet in Hell | 1 (1) | 1 (0) |
Invaders from Mars | 0 | 0 |
The Chimes of Midnight | 0 | 5 (3) |
Seasons of Fear | 2 (0) | 2 (0) |
Embrace the Darkness | 0 | 2 (1) |
The Time of the Daleks | 0 | 0 |
Neverland | 10 (2) | 0 |
Zagreus | 3 (1) | 1 (0) |
Total | 19 (9) | 13 (6) |
- So as can be seen, she frequently uses both names. Since "Charley" is her most commonly used name, it makes sense for the page to be moved to "Charley Pollard". Danochy ☎ 00:42, August 23, 2020 (UTC)

New image[[edit source]]
With the recent release of the vinyl edition of The Chimes of Midnight, there may be a potentially better image for Charley's portait, for the following reasons:
1) It has less unnatural lighting than the current one.
2) It despicts Charley looking directly left, instead of facing towards the screen. OncomingStorm12th ☎ 16:57, September 15, 2016 (UTC)
- I do like that picture, but it's not much better in terms of natural lighting. How about this one? P&P talk contribs 17:04, September 16, 2016 (UTC)
- I like this picture a bit, but the two issues I have with if for an infobox are: the diagonal pattern over Charley's face, and that she is also looking directly foward, not left. OncomingStorm12th ☎ 02:24, September 17, 2016 (UTC)
- I agree that we need to find an image of her not staring at the camera with a tone of "this is a good cover image, right?" I'm going to look into the comic she was mentioned in, to see if there is some sort of visual of her that accompanied this. EDIT: Dead end there. OS25 (Talk) 19:10, April 24, 2017 (UTC)
- I would agree that OS12th's suggestion is far better than the current image, which, I believe, was (for that matter) added without discussion. We want them looking left — but not that left. I mean, we all know what happens when you turn left when you shouldn't… Joking apart, not only is OS12th's suggestion miles better than the current one in terms of pose (even if the current one is acceptable), but the current one is also strangely grainy, and more than a bit overlit.

- I'm not opposed to people putting forward even more submissions if they think there's anything better, but frankly the current image is a bit of an embarrassment to have in the infobox of a major companion any longer when we've got at least one clear candidate to replace it that is an improvement in every way. I mean, it has been just about two months, and no one's tried to defend the current image.
- For the tl;dr crowd out there: we're changing to OS12th's suggestion because it's an obvious improvement on the current image, but feel free to suggest more alternatives if there's anything even better out there. --Scrooge MacDuck ☎ 23:28, November 11, 2020 (UTC)
Yeah, the image I used was from The Light at the End limited edition. The image looked quite good, until I had to compress it to fit the 100kb file size limit. I personally quite liked it, but it wasn't the best in quality.
It's a pity with Charley, as the is such a lack of good images to choose from, but the image you chose, Scrooge MacDuck, does at the very least look cleaner and more presentable.
Fingers crossed that the Eighth Doctor and Charley will appear in some capacity soon, whether it be a Big Finish webcast or something like The Night of the Doctor for the sixtieth anniversary.

- The "new" image chosen was actually in use for ages before it was replaced by that one comic panel so I'm confused as to why it wasn't immediately reinstated when that business was cleared up. Anyway, it's all fixed now so it doesn't really matter. --Borisashton ☎ 00:19, November 12, 2020 (UTC)
New infobox image[[edit source]]
I'd like to suggest the above image of Charley from the cover of These Stolen Hours for the infobox. This image is without the purple tinge so we can better see what colour her eyes, skin and hair are and, in terms of how her face is positioned, it's otherwise almost exactly the same. Jack "BtR" Saxon ☎ 20:11, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- I also agree. LauraBatham ☎ 10:28, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- Hadn't seen this before, but I think it's fair to say this is a fairly uncontroversial decision. Usually, a debate for a new infobox image would be open for longer, but Charley's an audio character; there's only so many images of her to choose from, and I think the suggested one is the only "new" one since the last discussion, and it's not likely we're getting many others in the (near) future. Given this is almost-the-same-as-the-previous-but-slightly-better, the suggestion is approved. OncomingStorm12th ☎ 01:20, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
