The Imperial Clans ruled Trion and its colonies for over nine thousand years in the galaxy's longest continuous scientific community, a time of technological development and prosperity for the planet that became known as the Old Regime. They proclaimed themselves masters of eighteen suns and undertook time travel experiments which they believed were sabotaged by the Time Lords.

The regime was initially harsh and dictatorial, but settled down after Clan leaders Ykstort I and Nilatis IV. Although the Clans' supremacy was not questioned, the non-Clan populace were permitted to indulge in wars and savagery without their interference. Three thousand years before 1984, they built the Vacuum Transport system. As they did not interact much with the non-Clansmen, they lost touch with them and failed to notice a new development in everyday politics which culminated in the Trion Civil War, which, although not started by her, became controlled by Rehctaht.

Rehctaht eventually won and established the Revolutionary Regime. She exiled the Clans, who included Vislor Turlough's surviving family, and ruled for seven years before the Counter-Revolution replaced her government with the Committee of Public Safety. The Committee rescinded the Clans' exile and allowed them to return, (PROSE: Turlough and the Earthlink Dilemma) paving the way for the return of Turlough and Malkon. (TV: Planet of Fire)

Following the Counter-Revolution, the Clans had to interact far more with the rest of the populace, living amongst them. (PROSE: Turlough and the Earthlink Dilemma)
