By the Book is a Doctor Who Adventures comic strip published in 2013.

Summary[[edit] | [edit source]]

A space freighter is in trouble and about to crash because of the interference by a Garaman that has been hiding in the ship's manual.

Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]

A space cargo freighter in 2269 is in trouble. Hogan's first time in charge while the rest of the crew are in deep cryo-sleep looks doomed to failure as the ship makes a direct heading for Lunar City Six. When the Doctor and Clara arrive, Hogan is grateful for the "technical support". He explains he followed the manual but it's all gone wrong. Flicking through the pages of the manual the Doctor releases a creature made from pure written language — a Garaman. The Doctor explains the Garaman thrives on chaos and must have been hiding in the manual and rewritten it. Outrunning the creature the Doctor leads Hogan and Clara back to the safety of the TARDIS where he locks the telepathic circuits on to the Garaman and scrambles the TARDIS's translation circuits. No longer able to understand itself the Garaman is thrown into a state of total confusion. With the TARDIS firmly rooted to the ships floor the Doctor leads Hogan and Clara back to the space craft where what is left of the Garaman is jetisoned into space. Without the Garaman the manual is restored and Hogan sets about sorting out the ship.
