John Whiteside-Smith was an adviser to Queen Elizabeth I of England. He played a role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. He was the son of Thomas Smith‎ and Sarah Whiteside, and an ancestor of Evelyn Smythe.

In January 1555, Evelyn accidentally placed her ancestor's life in jeopardy, creating a nexus point in time which began erasing her family and then herself from history. The Sixth Doctor, who had brought Evelyn to that time period, saved the lives of Queen Mary I and Sarah, who was pregnant at the time. Out of gratitude, she promised to name her son after the Doctor, who was using the alias of John Smith. (AUDIO: The Marian Conspiracy)
