Stovepipe hat
A stovepipe or stove-pipe hat was an unusually tall top hat favoured by the Second Doctor.
The Doctor first donned his hat shortly following his renewal before exploring the planet Vulcan. (TV: The Power of the Daleks [+]Loading...["The Power of the Daleks (TV story)"]) However, he apparently became disenchanted with the hat rather quickly, as he rarely wore it after his adventures with Ben, Polly, and Jamie in Atlantis. (TV: The Underwater Menace [+]Loading...["The Underwater Menace (TV story)"]) During the Dalek invasion of Trodos, the Doctor used the hat to cover a Dalek's eyestalk, blinding it. (COMIC: The Trodos Ambush [+]Loading...["The Trodos Ambush (comic story)"]) He wore the hat again during an adventure with Barnabus, (COMIC: Barnabus [+]Loading...["Barnabus (comic story)"]) and later while exploring a jungle planet. (COMIC: Jungle Adventure [+]Loading...["Jungle Adventure (comic story)"]) Dr. Who also wore a stovepipe hat while playing his recorder during the Diddymen's hike; they may have stopped to listen to him play during this. Abraham Lincoln also famously wore a stovepipe hat, as he did when he met the Third Doctor in Gettysburg in 1863. (COMIC: Backtime [+]Loading...["Backtime (comic story)"]) Will Johnson once wrote Claire Bartlett a letter describing the president's post-war trip to Richmond, Virginia. He said that the "grand stovepipe" allowed the president to stand "two heads taller than any of those around him", making him easy to identify in a crowd. - Though the televised series never calls it a "stovepipe hat", at least a couple of works of prose fiction — The Murder Game and Wonderland — do. Contrariwise, some fashion experts might disagree that it's actually a stovepipe, as it doesn't have a flat top.
