Kingdom of Scotland

The kingdom of Scotland was at one point distinct from the English Crown.

In the mid-13th century, the King of Scotland was Alexander II. He died "five or six years" prior to 1242 and was succeeded by his son. (PROSE: Sanctuary [+]Loading...["Sanctuary (novel)"])

In 1540, James V was the King of Scotland. (TV: Tooth and Claw [+]Loading...["Tooth and Claw (TV story)"]) Around this time, Mary Stuart, better known as Mary, Queen of Scots, acceded to the throne. (PROSE: Verdigris [+]Loading...["Verdigris (novel)"] et al.) The future James VI was the son of Mary and Darnley. (PROSE: Girl Power!)

In 1603, James also became King of England, upon the death of Elizabeth I. (PROSE: Birthright [+]Loading...["Birthright (novel)"]) According to one account, with the union of the English and Scottish crowns, "James VI of Scotland [became] James I of the United Kingdom". (PROSE: The Dying Days [+]Loading...["The Dying Days (novel)"]) According to another account, the two kingdoms continued to exist separately (PROSE: The Roundheads [+]Loading...["The Roundheads (novel)"]) with James serving as James I of England until his death in 1625. In the Game of Napoleon and Wellington, the kingdom of Scotland broke off from the United Kingdom, splitting from the separate kingdoms of England and Wales. The Countess was aware that the United Kingdom was a nation which "started out as separate little kingdoms that gradually unified" and, upon the collapse of Napoleon's World Empire, they were encouraged by the Players to "revert to type".
