Series 1 (Gallifrey)
Series 1 of Gallifrey was made up of four audio stories which were released between March and May 2004. It starred Lalla Ward as President Romana and Louise Jameson as Leela.
Overview[[edit] | [edit source]]
Series 1 reintroduced President Romana and Leela, who were shown meeting for the first time in the 2003 Main Range story Zagreus. It also saw the return of Cardinal Braxiatel and K9 Mark II, who had appeared in the same story, as well as K9 Mark I, Darkel and a new incarnation of Andred in their first appearances for Big Finish.
Series 1 dealt with the origin and theft of the Timonic Fusion Device and the threat it posed in the hands of Free Time, as well as exploring the continued political relationship between the Temporal Powers following the events of The Apocalypse Element. It also introduced and resolved the mystery of Andred's disappearance.
Production[[edit] | [edit source]]
Series 1 consisted of four episodes, labelled on their covers as Chapters 1-4. It was produced by Jason Haigh-Ellery and Gary Russell, the latter of whom directed the series and script edited Weapon of Choice.
Russell intended for the range to make use of serialised storytelling as Big Finish's Bernice Summerfield and the Main Range did not and worked on the story with Alan Barnes, who came up with Free Time and wanted to write a story on a train. Russell asked Barnes to write all four of series 1's stories but, after Barnes agreed only to write the first and fourth stories, Stephen Cole and Justin Richards were brought in due to their reliability. The three writers came up with the Torvald/Andred twist, of which Russell was unaware.
Retrospectively, Russell did not believe that the serialisation was used to its best effect in series 1, although he did believe that it contained good setup and character work, and looked to improve on this with series 2.
