Night of the Living Cybermen

Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]

Inside the Farwol Catacombs on another planet, Nila Sullivan is trying to find her way around. She calls out, asking who’s there. Speaking to herself, she complains about her choice to volunteer for field work, saying she should have stayed at the university, and now she’s cut off, lost and surrounded by corpses, joking that it's like a party with the tenured faculty, when realising that there's no one around to hear her. From behind, the Doctor says that he heard her and tells her it was a great joke.

Nila asks him who he is and what he's doing there. The Eighth Doctor presents himself and tells her he's just passing through, looking for something. She asks "Doctor Who?" and he says it's a great question, and asks her name. She presents herself as Professor Nila Sullivan of Evol-1 University. He says that it’s a nice campus with lots of greenery, and she asks him if he's part of the expedition. He clarifies if she means the one that left the planet, then says he's more of an adventurer. She panickily asks if she heard that right.

The Doctor tells her that his sensors show that they left hours ago. She complains that they left her for dead and says that she should not have come. The Doctor reasons that field study is where interesting things happen, asking her where her spirit of adventure is. She says that she prefers a good book and a cup of Chai, telling her to call her "Professor Sullivan", again asking his name. He tells her it’s just "the Doctor". She asks him if he has a ship. He confirms he has one and says he won’t mind taking her back to Evol-1, but that he has to find something first.

Nila asks him if she heard right that he lent something to a Farwollian, which he confirms, saying they must have been buried with it. She tells him that that is impossible as no people have been there for centuries. He tells her he has his ways and to not worry about it. She takes offense to that, saying she will worry as much as she wants saying he could be a dangerous loon, roaming a catacomb saying he has lived for centuries. The Doctor objects but is interrupted by a broken voice. They're both startled.

A zombiefied Cyberman appears in front of them, repeating a broken sentence. Nila shouts, asking what that thing is. The Living Cyberman continues it’s broken sentence. As the Doctor says that it is something unnatural and most importantly something they need to run away from, telling her to follow him. The Living Cyberman says "Delete".

Elsewhere, Nila pants as the Doctor says he thinks they lost it for now, asking her if she's okay, being out of breath. She is confused how he is not, saying she should never have left the library, mocking her fellow expeditioners' plea for her to go with them. The Doctor clocks it, tellimg her he's let her catch her breath. She asks him what that thing was, and he tells her it’s a Cyberman, but only half-converted. Nila bemoans her decision to go on the expedition.

The Doctor tells her that they’re close, telling her that his sonic is pointing them. She asks him how he knows and if the device works. It pings, and he says it does and tells her he will check their current position. She asks him if he is sure he wants to raid the tomb when the dead are walking. He says he is sure, pointing to an unmoving Cyberman. She asks him why that is and he tells her the device they found is the cause.

She asks to make sure, if he lent an EMP device to a long dead space colonist. He says that the colonist didn’t tell him why, only that it was important. She asks him if he really just gave it away, to which the Doctor says that he is a generous man and also the colonist helped one of him once before. Nila is about to asks what he means by that but is interrupted by the Cyberleader who wants to delete the intruders. The Doctor realises that unplugging the EMP had unexpected consequences. She asks if they’re going to run again.

Nila asks the Doctor if his sonic can do something. He says he is not sure, saying that their attacker has been re-animated by nanites, meaning his brain is dead but the body is still moving. The Cyberleader exclains "Upgrade". The Doctor ponders that maybe he can reconfigure the EMP device to expand the field. Nila asks if that won't need more power, but he tells her not to worry and that his ship has power to spare. The Cyberleader repeats its sentences.

They reach the TARDIS, and she asks if that is it. He tells her that the old girl has never failed him before. The Cyberleader follows behind them, and Nila tells the Doctor to hurry. The Doctor says he's working on it as he makes it work. The EMP field expands and the Cyberleader stops moving. Nila congratulates him, and he tells her that they will now be going to Evol-1 University.

The TARDIS materialise in Victorian London. The Doctor steps out, confused. Nila asks why they aren’t at Evol-1, and he says that time travel is not an exact science. She asks him she heard right, and he asks her if he didn't mention that the TARDIS can travel through time. She asks him when and where they are. He tells her that by the smell he is guessing 1890s London.

She asks if they’re on Earth before the wars and disasters of the 20th Century, and he apologises, saying that they should go back in the TARDIS, but she refuses. He asks her if something's the matter. She backtracks, asking if they can have a look around. He agrees to take her on a guided tour. She thanks him and tells him to call her "Nila".
