Plantagenet family

The Plantagenet family was an English Royal Family from the 12th to the 15th century.

The first known Plantagenet King of England was Henry II, who was descended from the early Counts of Anjou. He became married to Eleanor of Aquitaine and they had three children, future kings Richard I and John, (PROSE: The King's Demons) and Joanna. (TV: The Crusade)

Richard reigned England for ten years but lived in the country for only a few months during this time. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Crusaders) He died in 1199, suceeded by John. (PROSE: A History of Humankind)

John was suceeded by Henry III, his son, (PROSE: The King's Demons) who was crowned in 1216 when he was nine years old. (TV: Fugitive of the Judoon)

Henry IV, who was sometimes known as Henry of Bolingbroke and Henry Plantagenet, seized the throne from Richard II in 1399, after leading a group of rebels to depose him.

Henry was succeeded by his son, Henry V. (AUDIO: The Doctor's Tale)

By the reign of Edward IV, the reigning family was the Yorks. (AUDIO: The Kingmaker)

Behind the scenes

Although not mentioned in any narrative source, the House of York was a cadet branch of the Plantagenets. Additionally, Henry IV is generally thought to be the first King of the House of Lancaster, another cadet branch.

Richard II is also considered a Plantagenet, though he is not identified as such.
