In 1563 it was decreed that all religious prejudice was abolished in France, making all people free to practise their own beliefs, according to the First Doctor. Years later, in 1567, it was said that this decree undermined the French King's authority, and restrictions were imposed again to strengthen the hold of the Catholic Church.
