An alien crashed on Earth in Saigon in 1969 during the Vietnam War. It was sensitive to the flow of history and reacted badly to news stories on the radio. It hid in the Continental Palace Hotel, where a number of journalists were staying. It conditioned them to protect itself, causing them to also fear news broadcasts. The Third Doctor worked out the situation and entered the hotel with Sarah Jane Smith, intending to help the alien get home, but one of the journalists, Martin Jackson, shot and killed the alien.
