When the Eighth Doctor mentioned Shakespeare to Charlotte Pollard, Charley objected that he expected her to know all about the "obscure people" and gave Marlowe and Jonson as examples of Elizabethan playwrights that people had actually heard of. The Doctor was fascinated that she knew of Jonson and Marlowe but not Shakespeare which he claimed was "quite impossible" and this, combined with Orson Welles not recognising Shakespeare either, inspired the Doctor to search for and discover a time fissure in the 16th century and eventually that a young Shakespeare had been taken out of time.
